Fertility rates are calculated to provide the actual birth rates for a year or a period irrespective of the nation's age structure, which varies from one time to another. They are based on age-of-mother specific birth rates, i.e. the ratio between live births of mothers at a specific year of age and the mean population of women of that age. The method for estimating the population was revised in March 2024 and the time series updated from 2011 onwards, see details in the working paper.
