The 5-year's periods show annual means 1853-1935: Figures on the age of mothers distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate children but not between live births and late fetal deaths. For 1853-1935 the number of live births is computed from the number of mothers by means of the ratio live live births/number of mothers. It is assumed that the age-specific distribution of mothers delivering more than one child and mothers of stillborn children is the same. A comparison of the years 1936-50 reveales only slight deviations when this method is applied so that it is assumed to be sound for the years 1853-1935 as well. The method for estimating the population was revised in March 2024 and the time series updated from 2011 onwards, see details in the working paper.
