Fjallabyggð on the one hand and Langanesbyggð on the other are included with Northeast region. Siglufjörður was before part of Northwest region and Skeggjastaðarhreppur part of East region but these municipalities were united with other municipalities in the local government elections in 2006. Population figures for the regions have been adjusted accordingly.

Grímseyjarhreppur became part of the municipality of Akureyri 1 June 2009. The local council of Akureyri governs the combined municipality until local government elections in 2010. In the elections 2006 11 representatives were elected in Akureyri and 3 in Grímseyjarhreppur.
Þingeyjarsveit
Aðaldælahreppur and Þingeyjarsveit became one municipality 12 July 2008. In the elections 2006 5 council members were elected in Aðaldælahreppur and 7 in Þingeyjarsveit.
