The data include new entrants in day courses at the upper secondary level of education, i.e. students who have entered upper secondary education for the first time according to the Statistics Iceland Student Register, since its start in 1975. Data from 1995 refer to all students, but the number of students outside of day courses is small. These new entrants are tracked for four years, six years and seven years.
Those graduates are counted who have completed a programme at the upper secondary level of at least two year duration, according to the Statistics Iceland Register of Graduations.
Still in education refers to students who are studying in day courses, evening courses or in distance learning at the upper secondary or tertiary level in Iceland but have not graduated.
The classification system of education was changed in 1997, which possibly results in some changes in data before and after that year.
Information on the background of pupils is derived from Statistics Iceland's population data. Immigrants are those who were born abroad with both parents having a foreign background. Second generation immigrants are those who were born in Iceland but both parents are immigrants.
