The term 'flow' is used here to describe the ways in which material moves in and out of the economy. Quantities are all in kilotons. Material categories, including metals can have different form and composition depending on the flow paths.
As example: Imported metal can be the raw metal or metal oxide, while exported metal may be a refined product. Similarly, fish taken from the wild is not in the same form as when it is exported as a processed product.

Flow path (table)

Domestic extraction (DE)

Material flow from nature (DE) describes all raw materials brought to the economy for infrastructure development, production or consumption. It should be noted that farmed animals (e.g. cows and fish in aquaculture) are considered residents of the economy. This means that these animals do not 'flow' into the economy, but material can flow to them from nature.

Export

Export is considered a material flow to other economies, including foreign entities that are in the country.

Import

Imports are material flows from other economies.
