Average population is the average of the population at the start and the end of the year. Statistics Iceland revises the boundaries of urban nuclei every 5 years in years ending with 0 or 5. The boundaries are found by concatenating addresses in a municipality within 200 m mutual distance. Sports arenas are included if needed. A 400 m zone is drawn around the urban nuclei thus found. Minimum population is 50 persons at the time of review. Statistics are published for the whole 5 year period, as well as the next 5 year period even if the population falls below 50. The method for estimating the population was revised in March 2024 and the time series updated from 2011 onwards, see details in the working paper.
