Source for 1950 and 1960: Population Census on December 1 1960. Hagstofa Íslands, Reykjavík 1969.
Questions on educational attainment were first included in the 1950 census. The classification of education in 1960 was essentially the same as in 1950 as well as in 1981. The latter data were reclassified in accordance with ISMENNT-2011 providing the starting year of the statistical education register. The educational register is the basis for the 1981, 2011 and 2021 education figures.
When comparing censuses, the following must be considered: completion of minor courses for navigation or ship engine was considered as vocational education in the 1950 census, but not counted in later censuses and the statistical education register. For that reason, the 1950 figures are not fully comparable to later censuses. Another change is that degrees from all women's schools were considered vocational education in the 1950s, but in 1960 the degree from the Women's School in Reykjavík was included in the same category as the general education degree (real school).
In ISMENNT-2011 classification of educational attainment, a one-year study after compulsory education, such as one-year vocational education or a one-year pre-vocational school, is not considered as and education at the upper secondary level, but is included here in the 1981, 2011 and 2021 figures in order to improve the comparison with 1950 and 1960.
