A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

The original table has classification by if the land is managed or unmanaged. Since negligible portion of land in Iceland is unmanaged, the separation has been removed in the processing here.

Classification at start of year

Forest at start of year

Forested land and area with trees that grow over 2m in height and foiliage over 10% of visible area when fully grown. The forested area must be at least 0.5 hectares with minimal width of 20m.

Cropland at start of year

Acres and other areas that are harvested, such as fields. Fields that are no longer used are moved to the 'Grassland' category.

Grassland at start of year

Areas covered in excess of 20% with vascular plants, such as mossland, grasslands, heathers, floodplains, covered lava fields etc. Unusued fields (after 20 years) are classified herein as well as recovered land, which were previously classified as 'Other land'

Wetland at start of year

Area that is for the most part saturated with water. This includes mainly land covered with freshwater and not wetland covered with saltwater. Saltmires are accounted for in the subcategory of 'Unmanaged wetlands'' and not in their own category.

Settlements at start of year

Settlement include towns, roads, ports, airports and industrial sites

Other land at start of year

Other land includes glaciers, deserts, floodplanes and other areas where vascular plant coverage is below 20%

Unmanaged land at start of year

Land is unmanaged if it has never been used for settlements, aggriculture or grazing when such things are otherwise possible
