Register-based employment is a count of individuals from monthly pay as you earn (PAYE) and population data. PAYE data are based on information from the Iceland Revenue and Customs on settlements of withholding tax on wages and/or calculated remuneration. The population consists of all individuals in monthly tax documents. Employed individuals are those who had taxable income which corresponds to at least one hour of work per week at the minimum wage level. Once an individual meets this criterion, all of their jobs are included in the statistics, regardless of earnings in any particular job or industry. Individuals on maternity, paternity or parental leave who reported calculated remuneration during the reference period are also classified as employed. Statistics on register-based employment are temporary figures, as monthly updates to the PAYE register generally extend several months back in time. The most recent figures may therefore change in subsequent updates. In addition, methods used in the production of statistics from PAYE data are under continuous review, and improvements in methodology may have minor effects on the results. Figures for December, May and June may be overestimated when first published. This is because individuals receiving Christmas bonuses or vacation pay cannot be filtered out until two months after Statistics Iceland receives the data. Overestimates for these particular months will be corrected in the subsequent update (+2 months).
